Photography Workshop

Take your photography to the next level with this hands-on, assignment-driven, guided workshop.

Four days of coaching, shooting and critique, designed to advance your knowledge and experience in photography. These workshop will run for four Saturdays starting on the date shown in this listing.  The start time is 8:00 a.m. each day and return to Wichita is estimated at 3:00 p.m.

Kansas City Plaza Fountain shot

In this workshop you will spend 4 days taking assigned photos and Macroseeing those photos critiqued. You will receive a list of assignments along with helpful hints and technical background to help with each subject.

Register Early - Space is limited.

Bring your camera, tripod, flash, reflectors and all those photographic gadgets you've been collecting.

The critique sessions are anonymous so all students will see each other's work and have the opportunity to ask questions about each photo. You are welcome to discuss your images and the techniques you used to create the photo, or you may remain anonymous and simply ask questions along with the other students.

Lower Fox Creek SchoolMultiple Locations

The first day of the workshop will include an overview of the procedures, events and the location where we will be shooting that day. You will also receive your assignment list and we'll talk about some of the potential subjects at that location. After that we will simply head out to start shooting. I will be available to all students all day long to help you pick your subjects and get your shots setup. There will be a break for lunch and we will get together again for more shooting in the afternoon.

On the second day we will meet at a location where we will project your images and I will critique each of them with an opportunity for the class to discuss them. When we are done with the critique session we will spend the balance of the day shooting at the same location we were at for day one. This will give everyone the opportunity to refine the images they created on the first day.

Day three and day four will be repeats of days one and two, but we will work at a new location that offers a new set of subjects. You will also receive another list of assignments and briefing about the potential subjects at the new location.

Our shooting locations will be interesting out-of-town locations that offer subjects to fit the assignments for each day of the workshop. This is in effect a four-day combination photo excursion and workshop, so you'll get to see some places that you might now otherwise go to. Because these locations may require some travel time the scheduled times are estimates only, and we may need to be out later than the published daily end time.

What's included?

  • Lunches are included for all four days.
  • Transportation to and from each location.
  • Printed materials for assignments and the associated tips and technical references information.

What's will I learn?

  • Techniques for selecting your subjects before you take your shots.
  • How to apply the rules of composition to improve your output.
  • Controlling your camera to achieve the artistic effects you desire.
  • Using depth-of-field to best illustrate your subject.
  • Using various methods to demonstrate action in your photos.
  • Appropriate use of Flash with the various synch methods.
  • How to best present your photos for critique.

What else should I know?

  • You should have a good grasp on photography before attending this workshop and you should have a reasonable knowledge of your cameras functions.
  • We will meet at my studio at 2300 E Douglas Ave each day. The studio is located on the North side of Douglas Photographic Imaging - up the stairs to the red door. There is plenty of parking behind the building.
  • Departure will be on time, so don't be late.
  • You should watch the weather carefully and be prepared to deal with it while we are out shooting. Class goes on rain or shine, hot or cold and will only be postponed in the event of hazardous weather conditions. You MUST check your email daily for any updates necessary.
  • You will need to select and prepare your images for critique after each of the 2 full-day shoots. I will provide you with instructions for submitting your images on the 2 days when we will have the critique sessions. To do this you will need the ability to save the photos as jpg files and save them to a jump drive, flash drive, compact flash or secure digital card. You may email your images as long as they are emailed before 9:00 p.m. the day before the critique sessions.
  • You do not need to bring your tripod and lots of other gear, but there are certainly situations where you may want them along. I will have a limited amount of gear that can be shared by the students as needed. Your gear may need to fit under your seat in a van (tripods will have a place in the back of the van), so keep your gear down to what would fit in a standard carry-on bag for an aircraft.

Class size is strictly limited to 5 students!
This assures ample time for one-on-one interaction with each student.

Student Reviews:

I have taken every class from Jeff and been on a few excursions and have gone from taking hundreds of snapshots hoping for a few keepers, to taking a handful of photographs and most will be keepers. You will not find many people with as much experience in film development, digital, Photoshop, printing, scanning, business, teaching, studio, modeling, product photography, macro, and a tour guide through Kansas. Jeff can even make a drive through western Kansas a wonderful experience and you will come back with stories to pass on.  Mike B.

I have attended Jeff's photography class as well as a couple of workshops. I was a complete novice with my little point and shoot camera. Jeff insisted the camera didn't matter, it was all about trusting yourself to take it off "auto" and learn to really take pictures. The material was presented in a format easy for me to understand with lots of one on one instruction (and with a sense of humor!) He convinced me I was smarter than my camera, and the proof is in the photos. When people look at my photos and tell me I missed my calling and should have been a photographer... well that's a testimony to Jeff!  Lori K.
